#31 BURN BOX

#31 BURN BOX
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

You may have secrets that you don't want anyone to see when you're gone. Those should be designated to the "Burn Box."

Not that I have any of these things, but what are some of those secret things?
• Love letters from old flames,
• Recordings of phone calls with someone whose spouse didn't know,
• Photos of lovers who eventually married someone else,
• Poetry written after a broken heart,
• Anything sexually explicit you don't want children to see,
• Whatever you decide should remain secret.

Burn boxes

Seal the box and write on it: "Burn without opening."

#30 FURNITURE AND TEA

#30 FURNITURE AND TEA
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I've had difficulty standing back up from a sitting position on two pieces of my living room furniture. With my very sore, as-yet-undiagnosed, painful hip, I decided to sell these two pieces of Martha Stewart "Charlottetown" patio furniture. I'd owned and sold about eight pieces of the same set in my previous house in Pennsylvania. Then, here in Florida I had a chance to buy these two pieces, second-hand, from a couple who were moving to a smaller home.

So, I wrote a compelling post for two neighborhood Facebook resale groups and they sold together the next day. I felt good about the sale as the buyers had lost everything in Hurricane Ian. I like knowing that my things will be appreciated in their new home.

Loveseat

Wicker chair

Remaining in my living-dining area are a three-seat sofa (chesterfield, if you're Canadian), 3 office chairs, two desks, a small table for dining/ and writing, two filled bookshelves, a small chest of drawers at the front door, and 3 swivel stools that are kitchen counter height. That's all I need for work, dining, conversation, napping, and television watching.

Also....
I have a collection of
teas in my pantry that I rarely choose to drink any more. Some may have outlived their freshness dates. I divided them into two groups: caffeine-free and caffeinated teas. I brewed myself a cup of chamomile tea the other evening and found that its flavor was severely diminished. I poured out the hot tea and then threw away the remaining tea bags. This will be my system.

Decaf teas Rooibos
Caffeine-free teas. You can tell I've liked Rooibos teas.

Green + Black teas
Green and black teas

One by one I will try a flavor and deciding if that tea flavor is worthy of keeping or not. My stash of teas could be quite small by the end of this year. It's likely that I won't be buying more tea except for my morning Tetley British tea. My once-preferred tea, PG Tips, is now about $8 for 40 tea bags, no longer in my budget. It used to be $8 for 80 bags. Even that was pricey.

Next post: Sewing notions.

#29 HEARING AIDS AND CELL PHONES

#29 HEARING AIDS AND CELL PHONES
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I had my hearing retested today, and compared to the 2017 test my hearing is only slightly worse. While I was there I donated my father's old hearing aids. (No photo.) They were happy to get them as they can refurbish them and provide them to someone who otherwise can't afford them. Contact your local Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation with your unused hearing aid donations.

I'm still using my S Galaxy S8 cell phone – who needs an iPhone? – but I have
six older cell phones that I don't need and would like to sell. I will charge each one to see which work and which don't. At the very least they may be good to have as emergency phones for calling 9-1-1 only. And there may be some collectors who may only want to add them to their collection.

To offer the most value when selling, try to offer the chargers (home and car), original box, instruction manuals; tell whether the phone is locked or unlocked, and if it has a SIM card. You should provide the manufacturer name and provider (Bell, Virgin, TracFone, LG, etc.) and describe whether it works and/or has damage. Do some research online to determine value and offer an attractive price. And don't forget to remove your personal info and photos, and delete messages.

Virgin Samsung Galaxy 3

Update: I emptied my red address book of passwords and transferred them all to my free 3 x 5 file box. Now I don't have to have pages of crossed off contacts, but just update one card or rip it up.

#28 FUTURE BLOG POST TOPICS

#28 FUTURE BLOG POST TOPICS
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

Here is a list of likely future posts I'll write, not necessarily in this order:

1. Clothes, old and new, that likely will never fit me.
2. "Saved" Facebook posts and articles.
3. Record albums to transfer to CDs.
4. Photographic slides to digitize (JPG) onto a hard drive.
5. Photos to digitize (JPGs) onto a photo stick or throw out.
6. Old family vacation videos to transfer to DVDs.
7. Book manuscripts (paper) to bind and sell.
8. Cassette tapes of radio interviews (100s) transferred to CDs as MP3s
9. Video TV interviews to transfer to MP4s and upload to YouTube.
10. Books I'm ready to sell.
11. Website domain names.
12. Out-of-date pages from old websites.
13. 100s of backup copies of business content on CDs.
14. Dozens of music cassettes to transfer MP3s to CDs.
14. Vintage/antique silver, brass, and pewter.
15. Civil War era photos and collectibles.
16. Hand-crafted jewelry.
17. Old coins.
18. Unneeded stationery and paper stock.
19. Bookmarked pages on computers.
20. Everything on several Internet "clouds."
21. Vases, glassware, and serving pieces.
22. Artwork.
23. Boxes of my old tax files.
24. Boxes of research intended for future books to write.
25. Rolling wire shelves (7) that currently hold 155 filled plastic bins.
26. Portable business and kitchen appliances.
27. Old cell phones (6).
28. Old hearing aids (2).
29. Old postcards.
30. Cloth shopping bags.
31. Facebook posts.
32. My father's music CDs
33. My mother's nondigital photos from her published books.
34. My father's medical and bank, and brokerage records.
35. Old X-rays.
36. Old calendars saved for memoir research.
37. TV shows I've recorded on DVR.
38. Places to sell or give your stuff.

What can you add of your own to this list?

I'm considering the possibility of offering my experience as a local 6-week live (in-person) course. I'm not sure "Death Cleaning" as a title will go over well with my 60+ year-old students... or perhaps it will capture their attention enough to sign up.

Yesterday I sold the very last of my stock portfolio. It was $.0068 of a share of Walmart stock. It sold for $1.38. When the funds are available I will transfer them to my checking account and close the brokerage account for good. This made me a little sad; I felt wealthy when I had investments, even if miniscule.

I finally attacked my overflowing recipe box. I tossed all the recipes that were duplicates, recipes that were too complicated, and those that had ingredients my body can no longer tolerate.

Tossing: left. Keeping: right. Now I don't need such a large box to hold them.

I no longer need a recipe box that is 8.5" x 10.5" x 5"...

But a smaller box that is only 6.5" x 10.5" x 2.5".
And it can all fit into a 9" x 6" envelope.

I was so pleased that my 5 Impossible Pie recipes are now clipped together that I baked myself an Impossible Quiche. (Mushroom and ham.)

#25 DOMAIN NAMES

#25 DOMAIN NAMES
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I have too many domains that aren't bringing me income so it's time to let some go. The ones in red are for sale.

AdviceEmpire.com It's my website for promoting my consulting to consultants and practitioners.

AndreaReynolds.com It's this site where I post about my Swedish Death Cleaning progress.

AndreasEstate.com I post my items for sale here.

DalineDudley.com My neighbor's website I made for her.

ExpertsWhoSpeak.org I intend to rebuild a speaker agency/advocacy.

MoneySmartsNL.com (For Sale) I planned to promote a newsletter on money but realized I have no credibility.

ProfessionalIntegrity.website I use this to post letters I've written to companies that still owe me money but are either refusing to pay or simply ignoring me. This way my readers know how these companies treat seniors.

ReynoldsUniversity.com At the moment it has some of my books on it, but its original purpose was to start a series of fun classes for my community of seniors. It seems, though, that seniors don't want to learn about things; they want to use their hands and have fun: golfing, playing card games, knitting, dancing, playing in the pool, volunteering, dining out, etc. Can't blame them. I may still use it for courses for consultants.

The HaloFactor.com This, too, was meant to be for a book I started writing about how to stop feeling invisible (as many of use do as we age). I'll keep it for now.

The KindnessChronicles.com This was meant to be for a book I still want to write, but will I? I may let it expire or sell it.

TheUndercoverClient.com
I intended this to be an educational site for businesses that were disappointing clients and patients, like me. I like the name so I may keep it a while longer in case I ever write a book with that title.

ALREADY GONE

BeaSeville.com I don't think anyone got the moniker. It was meant to be a site promoting etiquette, empathy... and civility.

ChoreWhisperer.com This was my Handy Woman site where I hoped to get $30-an-hour projects, but seniors here only want to hire men to do what I can do. I mean, I did renovate two houses before relocating to Florida. Instead, I got requests to clean bathrooms and kitchens.

FromAdversitytoAdventure.com I never got to the adventure part.

GilliansGems.com My sister's handcrafted jewelry was posted here. Now it's on AndreasEstate.com

MakeAnEffortBook.com A book I never got around to writing.

MissedBlessings.com A book I never got around to writing.

MorganChadwick.com This was a site for selling my books. My books aren't selling so why keep it?

MyLifeinSnippets.website The beginning of my memoir, now posted on AndreaReynolds.com

My99DollarHouse.com I posted photos of how I transformed a blighted house into a cozy AirBnB home. I thought it could be a book, but I don't see any interest.

MyMothersNovel.com I will publish it eventually, but likely under a different title.

YourWisdomIsWorthAMillion.com
There wasn't much interest in this.

YourWisdomIsWorthMilliions.com Same with this one, even pluralized.

There may be more available later.

#24 FACEBOOK DELETIONS

#24 FACEBOOK DELETIONS
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

There are multiple reasons why I'll start deleting posts and pictures from my Facebook page.

1. Many of the posts I've
shared that turn up in my Facebook Memories are no longer visible on the original poster's page.

Screen Shot 2023-08-17 at 5.47.41 PM

2. Many posts are
irrelevant. I attended a webinar in which the expert recommended removing what doesn't apply to your current work. You know, silly stuff. This way the page supports and promotes my work.

Screen Shot 2023-08-17 at 5.50.32 PM

3. Some of the posts are meant
for my eyes only. If someone becomes my digital legacy person that person will see items that I didn't want anyone else to see... unless I remove them now. (No example here.)

4. I don't have a
digital legacy person (so far): a trusted person who will memorialize my page when I'm gone. If the page stays up when I'm gone, I'd like it to have only basic stuff on it.

5. Not only will I remove some posts, memes, and photos, but I will also go through a big pile of
saved posts that I've collected in about 30 or 40 categories.

Screen Shot 2023-08-17 at 5.44.15 PM

6. And lastly, this exercise will give me an opportunity to see what I've posted since 2008. Some of it may trigger a memory for my memoir.

Update: Each day Facebook sends me memories of previous years from that day. That's a perfect opportunity to save a post that's useful for a future book, and delete those of no interest. Of course I'll eventually have to deleted the ones I saved as book material.

#23 COMPUTER DELETIONS

#23 COMPUTER DELETIONS
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

For the past month I've been hard at work on 3 projects, two of which took me away from writing more posts here.

Project #1. Here I am seven years past full retirement age, and I think I finally have enough combined earnings from Canada and the US to qualify for US Social Security benefits under the Totalization Agreement between the two countries. I completed two applications. The first was the standard Social Security form; the second application dealt with my Canadian information. The package of documents contains 30-plus pages so tomorrow I'm taking it to the Social Security office near Tampa. It's a 35 mile drive each way.

I have no idea what answers I'll receive to my questions. How much will the benefit be? Will I have to relinquish my Canada Pension and Old Age Security? Will there be any retroactive funds? When will I start receiving benefits? My guess is that I may have only enough SS income to cover my monthly HOA fees and not much else. I will certainly be happy if it's more.

Two good things:
a. I learned that because of my age, I could still earn any amount of income without having my benefits reduced. b. While hunting for all the documents I was able to throw out some old tax files which emptied two file boxes.

Project #2. Because I will not be eligible for Medicare benefits under the Totalization Agreement I am once again applying for Medicaid.I've been denied 3 times for reasons I've not understood. It was time to apply for a renewal of SNAP benefits so I sent in 10 pages of documents to prove my financial position. I hope to learn DCF Florida's decision by the end of this month (August).

I don't like having to apply for welfare benefits, but if my Speaker Agency takes off in 2024, perhaps then I'll have enough income to afford to pay Health Insurance Premiums.

Deleting downloads Health vs Love

Project #3. Both my computer and laptop have been so clogged that I was having trouble uploading anything to the Internet. So I did the following to free up space on both devices:
- Deleted many duplicate documents,
- Moved hundreds of documents to an external hard drive,
- Deleted 200+ browser tabs,
- Deleted dozens of documents from both desktops,
- Moved songs from iTunes onto CDs,
- Backed up photos to a Photo Stick.

MacBook Pro Podcasts iTunes.jpg

Work still to be done:
- Listen to and delete podcasts,
- Delete 100s of bookmarks,
- Read and remove articles saved for book and article research,
- Clean up my Facebook page to reflect my book writing and speaking,
- Remove items from iCloud,
- Remove items from Google Drive.

Will this ever end? (I blame it on my previous laziness.)

#22 RECORD ALBUMS

An article on Facebook gave a list of 150 record albums that have brought sales of large sums of money. These two albums, which I have, supposedly brought one seller about $600. I wonder how much I could auction them for.

$600 albums?
Supertramp, Breakfast of Champions • Fleetwood Mac, Rumors

Even after selling my best albums, back in the late 80s, I still have 75 record albums. Each of these boxes weighs 22 pounds.

2 boxes of albums

I will sell them when I can make time to photograph, research, and post each one. I also have a way to record albums on music CDs so next time I move I'm not carrying heavy boxes of albums.

I took all my work CDs – not music – out of their plastic cases and inserted them into paper sleeves. This reduced the volume of the discs so they fit in a smaller box, and I'll sell the 90 cases for $9 or $10.

90 plastic cases

I have not sorted through the disks; I'll do that when I have more leisure time, but I did find some articles and book manuscripts I can publish.

#20 MAGAZINES + NEWSPAPERS

#20 MAGAZINES + NEWSPAPERS

I have accumulated a big pile of magazines and local weekly newspapers and it's time to let them all go. The alumni, Home Depot, and AAA magazines have been flipped though for anything interesting and are ready to hit the recycle bin.

Magazines

The weekly newspapers below have ads for local services that I may want to keep so I'll clip those out as I watch TV.

Weeklies

The magazines below may offer captions and photos I can use on a vision board I plan to create. Then each week I'll add to the neighborhood recycle bin. From now on I plan to go through periodicals the day they arrive.

#19 TIFFANY STERLING SILVER

#19 TIFFANY STERLING SILVER
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

UPDATE: Replacements.com has offered me $432.00 for it. I decided no.

This Tiffany & Co Sterling silver fruit dish was a wedding gift to my grandmother, or perhaps it was given to her as an engagement gift. This piece was most likely produced in 1902, which would make it about 120 years old. It's twelve inches across.

For safety, this bowl is not stored in my home.

I must sell it as I have
no heirs and nobody has asked to receive it in my Will. I'd love to get at least $2,000 for it... The estimate on my upcoming dental bill will be $1,750. I will offer it on eBay and also to Replacements.com If you scroll down to the bottom of this post you'll see a screen shot from an antiques dealer's website of a similar bowl, but three inches smaller, with an asking price of $4,250.

My grandmother's maiden name was Florence Helene Koller (FHK). Then she became John Louis "Lou" Reynolds' wife. She and my grandfather married in 1904 and they ran a rooming house in Westfield New Jersey. (This may be where I got the bed & breakfast gene.) I remember seeing this bowl on their sideboard, and I suspect it may have seen a lot of use from their boarders. There is a small, almost unnoticeable dent in the top, about the two o'clock mark.

I inherited the Tiffany bowl when my grandmother died. I was 12. I have not used it in these 60+ years, but have carried it from place to place as I've moved.

#18 MY WISHLIST

#18 MY WISHLIST
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I bought two pieces of poster board with the intention of making a Vision Board. With too many other things to do I doubt if I'll get to it any time soon. And with too little income, these are likely far into the future if at all. But for fun, I'll post my wish list here:

1.
A countertop dishwasher. I do all my cooking and eating at home so I hand wash dishes 3 or more times a day. And my fingers are starting to be gnarled from arthritis. It would save me time to have a small appliance. There is no room in my tiny kitchen for a built-in or even a portable dishwasher, but if I were able to sell or rent out my condo in the future, the potential owner or tenant will likely be put off if there is no dishwasher. When I raise an extra $200 I may order one from Walmart for my birthday, July 16.

Countertop dishwasher

2. A newer golf cart. My 2005 EZGO's top speed is 13 miles per hour and doesn't take me to places I need to go, like the South Clubhouse, Publix, Aldi's, dentist office, etc. I'd like an EZGO that has a turn signal indicator and lights – so I can travel at night inside the community – and can go up to 25 miles an hour, taking me farther and faster. $7,000 is not in my budget... and an upcoming dental expense may kill that dream.

UPDATE: I was able to trade in my 2005 golf cart for a faster 2004 golf cart that had turn signals, better batteries and better headlights.

EZGO

3. A walk-in shower. Something simple. I don't need glass doors; I can hang a shower curtain. My tub shower is difficult to step into because lifting my bad knee is painful. I've lost my balance a few times as a result, but thankfully I have a grab bar at one end that has kept me upright. The going rate of $10,000 is not in my budget either.

Walkin shower

4. A Winnebago Travato. At $130,000 for a used model this is likely to be nothing more than a fantasy. These start at $175,000 for a new one. But a girl can dream. What I should do instead is figure out ways to get the funds to repair my 2004 Ford E-350 so it's drivable again, and perhaps one day I will live in it full-time.

Travato

#17 OLD MANUAL MASTERS

#17 OLD MANUAL MASTERS
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I've written and self-published about 30 books so far. Over the years I've updated them, and currently offer the titles for sale only as digital files (PDFs).

Manual masters

So I have these slightly out-of-date paper masters in 2.5 file boxes that are taking up shelf space. My contact information inside has changed rendering them "unsaleable."

Binding machine

longreach stapler

Therefore I will be using my trusty report binding machine to bind them and my long reach stapler to saddle-stitch booklets, and sell them, I hope, at deeply reduced prices. Then I can send them by mail to buyers.

Bound reports

These are only a few of the titles which will be available soon.

They will appear in the Clearance section on several of my websites, and in most cases there will be only one of each title. This is a task that requires attention and patience, so it won't all be done in one day, but it's something I can do while "watching" (listening to) an evening TV show.

#16 SHREDDING PAPERS

#16 SHREDDING PAPERS
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

As I write more letters to companies voicing my dissatisfaction, I'm able to let go of files I've saved to document my cases. Rather than feeding paper through my personal shredder, a few pages at a time, I'm collecting all the paper in a box.

As it's not a good idea to pitch sensitive documents in the community recycle bins, my Condominium Owners Association (COA) will
shred our documents for free. Membership is $5 a year, and Shredding Day is twice a year, November and April, for only a few hours. And yes, I must hang on to these documents for 5 more months, but I won't have to spend hours and hours of my time shredding papers.

So if you have old papers to destroy and you belong to a condominium community, see if there are free shredding days you can benefit from.

I estimate I may have
100 letters to write over the next months. Not only should that empty at least 6 more file boxes, but also net some good income. It all depends on the integrity of the recipients. And the letters could become part of a book I'd like to write that would benefit businesses. We'll see.

#15 APPLICATIONS

#15 APPLICATIONS
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

Last week I completed an application for Canada's Guaranteed Income Supplement and mailed it. I met all requirements such as already receiving Canada's Old Age Pension, but one: that I must live in Canada. I'm waiting to receive an answer. If that fails I'll try something else. Yep, that failed.

This week I applied for
Florida's Medicaid. I'd been denied several times before because I hadn't provided proof that I didn't have employment income. How do I prove something doesn't exist? I have not been employed since 1977 and the company in Canada no longer exists. They also wanted proof of non-employment income. My sales last month: $35 all cash. How do I prove that? Photocopy the cash? I think there's a law against that. Got it!

Yesterday I applied for
Venmo's VISA credit card because I sometimes receive a few dollars via Venmo. I was approved instantly for a $7,500 credit limit. Hmmm... that could be a lifesaver one day.

This week I'm working on a
letter to Lowe's in Erie PA. I paid for materials and labor for laminate flooring in 3 rooms, 3 closets, a landing, baseboards, and transition strips in my Post Ave. bungalow. The work crew left before finishing the job. I estimate they left 40% of the work not completed and also left me with multiple tasks they should have handled. Subsequently I had to hire other men to complete the job at an additional cost. My multiple requests for a refund have been ignored, so I will not only send a duplicate of my letter to Lowe's Headquarters in North Carolina, but I will also post my letter and photos on one of my websites. I'm asking for a refund, interest, and payment for additional work I had to do for which they were responsible. Photos: www.ProfessionalIntegrity.website/NOTDONE.html
No response, so next step is contacting the Pennsylvania State Attorney.

#14 BOXES AND SALE ITEM STORAGE

#14 BOXES AND SALE ITEM STORAGE

There's nothing like having someone loan you patio furniture to force you to clear out your small lanai/laundry room/storage room.

I "inherited" (on loan) 2 wicker chairs and a table, which serendipitously arrived just after I removed two rolling shelves that had been placed against the wall. But I was hoarding boxes, all flattened, but they were still taking up considerable, valuable space.

Yesterday I cut up half of the 35 boxes to be recycled. The other half will be done when my stomach muscles heal. (UPDATE: All done.)

Pile of large boxes boxes still to be cut down

Prior to that task, I moved the two shelves from the lanai and moved all the boxes of items I still hope to sell, to my living room, to make it more convenient when folks come to pick up what they buy. Everything is now on one shelf unit, or in the two cabinets on either side of it.

#13 NECKLACES AND COLLECTOR PLATES

#13 NECKLACES AND COLLECTOR PLATES
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I spent the entire three-day weekend posting photos, researching values, and pricing collector plates and necklaces. The collector plates once belonged to a friend's parents. I received them to sell. Only one of them was mine.
https://www.andreasestate.com/collectorplates.html

3-art-plates-2

Of the necklaces, a few of them are mine, a few were my mother's which I inherited, and the majority were hand-crafted by my younger sister Gillian. The cash from her pieces will go to her, 100%. www.AndreasEstate.com/necklaces.html

estee-lauder-

A friend asked me why I've posted them on my website when it's easier to simply post them in my local Facebook groups and Facebook Marketplace. Three reasons:

1. My local groups are mostly retired people who are trying to downsize their own things, sell what came with the condo they bought, or sell their own parents' things. My items just get lost in the crowd.

2. When I post on my website,
wwwAndreasEstate.com, there is a potential for people in other states to see my items. I have sold items to people in Michigan, Texas, Colorado, etc.

3. By posting items, descriptions, and prices, my
website becomes an inventory of all my stuff. Then, when I'm gone, someone will already have everything catalogued for sale for them. Smart?

There is more jewelry to post: watches, rings, pins, bracelets, earrings, and some others. But that is for another day.

This week I have business paperwork to attend to.

These are four of the small projects on my To Do List.

Recipes

Recipes to reduce to a few favorites.

20230527_125122 (1)

Passwords and addresses to transfer from Google and address books to 3 x 5 cards. This was recommendation made by an expert on Apple devices and software. Yeah, that surprised me, too.

Weekly tabloids
This pile of weekly tabloids from my small community. I will go through them and clip any relevant resources that could serve me in the future: attorney, dentist, etc.

Jewelry to sell
Jewelry to sell: some handcrafted, some antique. Necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings, pins, earrings. I'll post these on www.AndreasEstate.com and possibly Etsy.

When each is completed I'll post the before and after photos.

#10 MY FUTURE PLAN

#10 MY FUTURE PLAN
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

As I age – I'll be 74 in July – I worry about how I will afford to live. Without retirement income I need a survival plan, even if it's a short-term one.

Assuming I could either rent out or sell my one bedroom apartment, I had hoped to be able to
house sit without payment for people in my condominium community, taking care of their plants, pets, and mail, and keeping things running smoothly in their absence. But I discovered that most people will go north for the summer and leave their condo empty. They simply turn off their water and electricity. So that's not an option for me.

For now, this is what make the most sense to me:

1.
Sell everything I don't need to make more space in my condo. I've been working on that.

2.
Rent out my one bedroom apartment, in October or November, completely furnished, to a traveling nurse or medical professional. I prefer a non-smoker without pets who could stay a year or at least a half-year. (Rules say I can rent out only twice in one year, and I must pay a $150 fee for each new tenant.)

3.
Rent a room for myself in someone's two bedroom condo. Where and how much? I don't know.

4.
Store my boxes of business and personal items in my van which is parked in vehicle storage, close enough to get to by golf cart.

5.
Use my van as my office where I can write daily. Fall and winter only; too hot in summer months. Inside I have a potty, sink with water, solar panels providing power to my 1000-watt Jackery and a 40-watt power box which will power my laptop.

Doing this will not put any money in my pocket, but it will allow me to
break even on my basic household expenses. I will still need to find income for glasses, hearing aids, and dental work.

I have a lot of wisdom and experience to offer speakers, so I expect income will start to trickle in from
www.ExpertsWhoSpeak.org this summer once I finish the website and promote my courses, consultations, and contract critiques.

And if this fails, I'll give up my condo, fully furnished, and live in my van wherever I can find safe places to park and sleep, living off my tiny pension, writing short books.

#9 MY APPLICATION PROJECT

#9 MY APPLICATION PROJECT
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

I'm taking a chance that this could bring me a little more income.

GIS Desk

Canada has two programs that I am applying for.

1.
Guaranteed Income Supplement, which is for low income recipients of the Old Age Security pension which I do receive but in a very small amount (US $300). There are two conditions that make me eligible and one that does not. I will apply anyway. Update: The response from Canada was that I'm not eligible.

2.
Spouse Survivor benefit. If my ex-husband is deceased – he'd be 83 now – I may be eligible for a one time payment. However, I have no way of knowing his whereabouts as I have not been able to locate him in 36 years. If he's still receiving a pension, the government will know.
Update: I've applied for a Death Certificate search and awaiting a response.

I'm not sure what to do with these:

1. My trophy mugs from my appearances on Canadian TV.
Trophy Mugs

2. My urns with the cremains of my cats: Dickens, Casper, Jasper, and Canada.
Pet Urns

3. My paperweight and stones collection.

Paperweights

I like them all and don't want to part with them yet, but I have no idea what will happen to them later. Who would want them or appreciate them?

Can't find my previous posts? Click on 2023 in the sidebar. This blog groups the posts by year.

As I continue to clear my home, I am also rebuilding a business to bring in income. This time I'm clear on one service and my message, and I'm slowly developing the website. I'm returning to the service I provided when I left Canada and was no longer able to generate paid speaking engagements. Margaret Atwood permitted me to represent her interests in a major speaking event, and authors who commanded fees higher than $30,000 an hour allowed me to represent them.

So, I pivoted to acting as speaker agent-advocate for other speakers. My signature talk/event will be
"The $30,000 an Hour Speaker."

I will help speakers who not only want to increase their fees and add terms to their contracts that are more, but also, if they wish, be able to eliminate the 30% commission that agencies and bureaus take from their fees. For example, if a speaker can negotiate a $10,000 fee, she won't have to hand over $3,000 of that fee to a middleman.

First step: Until June 1st only, I'm offering to
review a speaker's previous contract for the small fee of only $49 (regular fee is $600.) Plus they will receive a free digital copy of my report of 33 Guest Speaker Amenities they may wish to include in future contracts. This is limited to the first 10 speakers.

My unfinished website is here:

#6 UPDATE

#6 UPDATE

Here's what I've accomplished since Blog #5:

1. Completed a 5-hour virtual course with Mathew McConaughey, and also a 3-day program to help me strategize who will be my clients, what solutions I can offer them, and how to deliver those solutions. I'm seeing that more people are speaking virtually, a result of the Pandemic; and I can serve them with my speaker agreement negotiation skills. I can show speakers how to generate better fees and contract terms, and stop leaving money on the table. You'll see the beginnings of my website here: www.AdviceEmpire.com

2. My computer was so clogged that it kept freezing as I tried to work, so I deleted more than 13,000 documents and photos from the desktop; some I trashed, some I copied to disks, and some I copied to an external hard drive that can hold 2 terabytes.

3. I sold my father's Turkish rug to a neighbor for a bit of money, and we became new friends.

4. I removed all the sold items from my website,
www.AndreasEstate.com. What's there is still available for purchase. Next to do is add more items, their descriptions and prices. There are still plenty of things available for sale before I post more.

#5 USE-CARE MANUALS

#5 USE-CARE MANUALS

Project completed.

I pulled together all my
appliance instruction manuals. They are collected in one box, labeled alphabetically in file folders. Now, when I sell or give away an item like a hair dryer or an ice cream maker, I know where the instructions are and can pull them out to hand to the next owner. Some, for major appliances, will remain with the condo if/when I sell it.

My Use care manuals (1)

My next three projects: Collect passwords, unclog computer, reduce browser tabs.

You could say learning is my addiction, my only addiction.

I sign up for courses that will benefit my future work as a consultant. But then I get distracted by life's obstacles, and I don't finished all the online courses I've signed up for.

It's time to catch up. Each week I'll complete another course and obtain the Certificate of Completion, as I continue to clear out my home.

Before I do so, there are 3 more courses that will take place this week and the first week of May. After that, no more new courses. I promise.

The first one on Monday is
The Art of Livin' with Mathew McConaughey DONE.
It's 5 hours, and it's free. The next is a three-day event, also free,
Offer Camp, on making a high ticket offer to clients (I took this one last year as well). The one in early May, The Yes Event, is a 3-day event on making a six-figure income with a small email list. It's offered at $197 but I was able to get it for only $47.

Then I start completing these past courses:
- Make a $1,000 a month (Noah Kaplan) DONE
- Offer Camp (Sage)
DONE
- The Yes! Event
DONE
- The Virtual Event on Virtual Events
DONE

- Build a Social Media Platform
- Bestseller Blueprint
- Consulting Client Membership (Wishlist)
- Big Ticket Breakthrough

- Money Loves Speed (Vitale)
- Life Coaching
- iMovie course (how to use iMovie)

- eBook Self-Publishing
- SEO and Backlink course
- Social Media Marketing
- Web Developer Course

- Amazon Affiliate passive income
- Finance and Accounting
- Kindle Publishing
- Google Analytics

When I'm finished, I'll be brilliant. (-;

Most of these were $10 each. Oh, and the over
200 digital books I've accumulated – most were free or $.99 – will have to sit on my Kindle app until next year.

#3 QUESTION: WHY SO MANY APPLIANCES?

#3 WHY SO MANY APPLIANCES?

© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

Two people asked this question: Andrea, why do you have so many small kitchen appliances? (This refers to the photo in Blog Post #2.)

My answer is multi-leveled:

1. I don't eat out in restaurants so
I cook all my meals at home. My body can't tolerate fats and oils and few restaurants have meals I can eat without uncomfortable consequences.

2. To satisfy my taste for "fried" foods I use an
air fryer.

3. I owned a Bed and Breakfast, so I had a
waffle maker for guests like the ones you find in hotels. I kept it, but use it infrequently. I can let this go.

4. I use my
rice cooker a lot, not only for rice, but also to steam vegetables.

5. I have a 5-quart
slow cooker and a small crock pot that cook food while I concentrate on work and, unlike pots or pans on the stove, I rarely burn any food this way.

6. Summers in Florida are very hot, so small appliances allow me to cook meals without turning on the stove which taxes the air conditioning system even more.

7. In the future I will need small appliances to be able to cook food when I live in my van full-time. The van does have a small
microwave which can run off the inverter and also my 1000-watt Jackery.

8. I also have, stored away, a
folding solar cooker. Food will cook inside a dark metal pot placed inside 2 large glass bowls that sit inside the reflective solar cooker. No electricity needed, only the sun.

9. I cannot eat ice cream – too much fat – so I have a
small ice cream maker that will freeze concoctions I choose. The downside is that the bowl must sit in the freezer for 24 hours before it will work. I could part with it.

10. I have a
blender to make smoothies, a food processor to puree soups and make hummus which I use in sandwiches in place of butter or mayonnaise.

11. I could also part with the
hand mixer. I find a whisk works fine for eggs and cake mixes.

12. The
roasting pan is used once a year for a whole turkey, if that. I probably should use it more to bake a quantity of chicken breasts, fish, or meatballs.

13. I have a
4-slice toaster I will leave in the condo and a vintage 2-slice toaster to take to the van.

14. I don't use the hot air
popcorn popper. The smell permeates the apartment for days and the kernels can chip a tooth.

15. I do use my
bread maker to make dough for both pizza and cinnamon raisin bread. I can't find the pizza rounds I like at my store and Amazon has them 3 for $35! (Yikes!) The cost of buying bread at the store keeps going up. I won't be able to use this in my van without electricity.

16. In the van I will also have a
Sterno stove and cans of Sterno, to use with small stainless steel pots and pans made for camping which I won in a contest.

17. I also have a steam iron and a steamer. The
steam iron uses 1500 watts and the hand steamer uses 800 watts. I will keep only the steamer; my Jackery can't power the iron.

18. My
Janome sewing machine has brought me a little income from paying customers but I find my diminishing eyesight makes it difficult to see small stitches. I will use it to alter my own clothes before I leave.

#2 SWEDISH DEATH CLEANING

#2 Swedish Death Cleaning

Swedish Death Cleaning?

What?
What's that?

Do you remember a book/movie about a New York writer named Julie who decided she would cook every recipe in Julia Child's cookbook? My intention is to do something like that but with a different book, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning.

My name is Andrea Reynolds. I'm a 70-something single woman living in Central Florida (Tampa Bay area). I emigrated to Canada in 1973 after graduating from Kent State University with a double bachelor's degree in Fashion and Marketing and Communication. I operated my own, successful Personal Public Relations firm in Toronto. I returned to the United States in 2008 to look after my dying parents and subsequently their estates. In 2017, at my 50th high school reunion I connected with a classmate who persuaded me to move to Florida with him. After 5 years I realized he didn't see a future with me, so I am purging my condo of stuff so I can sell it and move on,
geographically for now. Permanently, later on.

As I'm in my 70s and don't have a spouse, partner, children, or younger heirs,
I need to downsize in a very significant way. I need to get rid of more than 120 boxes of things and papers, but also, it's time I put my affairs in order so that when I die I will have left instructions for everything.

Rather than write a book – although that could come later – I will use this website to enter blog posts, photos, videos and maybe audio podcasts. I intend to show what I'm doing and have done with before-and-after shots, and offer suggestions to subscriber-supporters who may want to embark on a similar project for themselves or for their parents' estates.

While this appears to be a daunting project, I will tackle it one step at a time. Here's one small improvement I made, My small kitchen doesn't have enough room for all my dishes, small appliances, and food supplies. I started with a shelf of both appliances and food (top). I now have a smaller shelf unit with only appliances (below). Where did the food go? When I bought a new refrigerator because the compressor on the old one was making thumping noises, I unplugged it and it now serves as a food pantry. I keep the fridge door slightly ajar for air circulation.

Appliances and food Appliances only

#1 I QUIT.

#1 I QUIT
© Copyright Andrea Reynolds 2023

The phone number on the business cards below has been changed to 656-227-1130

I've been struggling to find work that will pay me enough to pay my basic bills and nothing has been working. So I quit.

1. I quit doing
alterations for local people because it pays me only about $6 an hour for several hours of work that makes my eyes blurry.

2. I quit offering to
edit books because when I agree to take the assignment, the assignment doesn't show up.

ARwriter

3. I quit offering to write demand letters on behalf of seniors who have lost thousands of dollars to unscrupulous contractors because they don't trust me enough to allow me to see the documents which provide the evidence I need to act on their behalf.

Justice

4. I quit offering handy woman services to paint rooms, assemble furniture, install new door locks, because they would rather hire a man to do the work at more money.

CHORE

5. I quit offering public relations and publicity advice to authors and experts because they would rather hire someone with a few years' experience than this woman with forty-plus years experience.

AR PR

6. I quit hoping a man will offer to marry me so I'll one day have Social Security spousal benefits.

Today I received a statement from the Social Security Administration saying that I still have only
30 work credits of the 40 needed to be eligible for benefits. My income is so low that I qualify for only one credit a year. At this rate, when I'm 83-84 years old, I may have 40 credits but will still receive only about $185 a month. On top of my $400 a month pension from Canada, that gives me only $585 a month to live on. I can't survive on that and still stay in my 800-square-foot condo.

So I will pivot.

1. I'll sell as much of my
household belongings (clothes, books, jewelry, art, music, family heirlooms) as I can for as much cash as I can. www.AndreasEstate.com

2. I will throw out/shred all paper not needed for taxes and future books.

3. I will get my
condo ready for sale to a new owner by fall when Northerners will be ready to move to Florida. It needs painting, staging, and small repairs.

4. I will demo the inside of
my van to make it livable, and get new batteries, new tires, and fix what doesn't work.

5. I will put my affairs in order:
will, trusts, etc.

I'll write more, as things progress.
